Today’s guest is Joe Crowe, co-founder of RevolutionSF.com, home of the RevolutionSF Roundtable podcast, which showcases commentary, criticism and comedy about sci-fi entertainment.
SCy-Fy: Joe, you are clearly very enthusiastic about podcasting.
JC: Podcasting is the new version of something many of us did when we were kids: talk into a recorder and pretend to be an actor, a comedian, a superhero. Now with podcasts, anyone can do any of those things and present it to anyone in the world, almost instantly. It’s a wonderful, low-cost medium. I highly recommend it to anyone, listener and creator. Podcasting is more fun than puny humans should be allowed to have.
SCy-Fy: How do you prepare for a show?
JC: We just wing it. We know each other well enough that when we turn on the recorder, we just relax and talk.
SCy-Fy: What are your future initiatives?
JC: We plan on doing more interviews and hosting more shows live at conventions.
SCy-Fy: What do you think will be the major challenges for podcasts in future?
JC: The biggest challenge, more even than finding an audience, is finding the time to record a podcast. Producing podcasts and taking up free time recording them are major time commitments when we could be spending time with family, sleeping, or even taking showers – ha ha!
SCy-Fy: What advice would you give to anyone presenting a podcast?
JC: Find your own unique thing you want to say. Don’t try to be like any other podcast. Don’t be boring. Don’t present dry facts or the same opinions everyone else has. That’s just repeating what everyone else already says. Relax and have fun.
Break your podcasts up into hour-long episodes. After an hour or so, the attention of the average listener fades. Have a plan when you sit down to record, even if you don’t follow it. Be creative and enjoy yourself, even if you’re talking about a serious topic.
SCy-Fy: Just between us – your secret list of useful resources?
JC: YouTube and Wikipedia if we forget something during the show. If you’re in front of a computer, you can find out a fact and keep on talking, so the listener doesn’t even know you had to look something up!
SCy-Fy: What keeps you going in hard times?
JC: Friendship. The community we have built on our website, at our convention visits and among our podcast hosts is so valuable. We’ve become a large, extended family.
SCy-Fy: Any controversy so far?
JC: Very little. People who disagree with us seem to just not listen. Those who listen to this podcast seem to agree with our opinions.
SCy-Fy: The most popular show you’ve presented? Your personal favourite?
JC: Our RevolutionSF News specials are popular because we sit down and record as quick as a popular geeky news story breaks, then cover all the story’s angles, while having fun with it, of course.
For example, our RevolutionSF News show right after big Marvel movie news came out.
My personal favourite is a live show I recorded at DragonCon in 2013. I host Stump The Geeks, a comedy show and trivia game every year. That year we recorded it. It’s nice to have a record of the silliness we get up to when we perform live.
SCy-Fy: Which forthcoming films and TV shows are you most looking forward to watching?
JC: All the Marvel movies. The new Star Wars. DC Universe movies. On TV, Flash is the best. Also great: Librarians, Game of Thrones and Doctor Who. And we always seek out the newest, latest shows.
SCy-Fy: Thank you and good luck, Joe.
